You are more important than your exams

Exam season is upon us! It’s the time of year when everyone seems to be talking about how much revision they are (or aren’t!) doing, and if we’re not careful, all this exam and revision and essay talk can drive us insane. Whether you’re at school, college, or university, exams are always stressful, and can make a lot of us feel really anxious.

Sometimes, we’re not even anxious about our results, it can often be the very idea of sitting in an exam room, surrounded by silence, with an hour and a half to prove we’re capable of going to college/uni/getting a degree, that causes most of the stress and anxiety. Just the thought of it is enough to make us want to pull the duvet over our heads and never leave our bed again!

I just want to give you a gentle reminder today that the age old saying “this too shall pass” is true for you right now.

I know it feels like the whole year has been leading up to this point. Maybe you feel as though your whole career rests on these next couple of months.

You are so much more brilliant than any exam can tell you.

It’s not a bad thing to want to do well in your exams, it’s good to set yourself goals and work hard to achieve them. As you do this, though, it’s so important to remind yourself that you are so much more brilliant than any exam can tell you. Your worth is valued so much higher than any grade you receive. Your potential and ability to succeed is never limited or capped by any exam result or university place.

You have been made intentionally, with purpose and unique gifts, and your capacity to create beautiful things, to come up with amazing ideas, to discover and explore and succeed is never limited or diminished because of the result of any exam.

Looking after yourself physically will do a world of good for your mental state.

As you invest time in revising and studying over the next few months, remember to take breaks, get fresh air, drink water and eat snacks. Looking after yourself physically will do a world of good for your mental state.

Also, keep taking time to do things you enjoy! Watch YouTube, go out with your friends, you’re definitely still allowed to enjoy your free time! If you schedule in time for breaks and chilling out, you’ll probably find it a lot easier to focus when the time comes to get some work done.

There are always going to be great options for you, no matter what happens on results day.

Remember, you are far more important than any exam or essay could ever be. Don’t let this time of year be too much of a stress for you. There are always going to be great options for you, no matter what happens on results day.

The Bible tells us “Don't fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God's wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down.” Philippians 4:6-7

It’s amazing how much better we feel when we talk to someone about what is worrying us!

It’s amazing how much better we feel when we talk to someone about what is worrying us! And there’s no better listener than God.
