Combat sports have been a part of human society for centuries. From the Ancient Olympics and the Greek Pankration, through to tournaments in the medieval era with jousting and swords (that still happens today!), through to modern day where all sorts of competitive martial arts are prevalent everywhere.

If there are two things that have prevailed throughout the aeons in this it’s that firstly the concept of proving physical prowess has always been an element of society, and secondly competitive boxing is still as popular now as it was back then.

Boxing hasn’t really changed that much as a sport since Ancient Greece, the only differences have been the evolution of equipment, safety, strategy and a scoring system but at the core, it has remained the same throughout history: two people enduring punches until one emerges victorious.

YouTuber Logan Paul announced he would be fighting British-born YouTuber KSI.

So when notorious YouTuber Logan Paul announced he would be fighting British-born YouTuber KSI (twice, the first was a draw and the second match went to KSI) the internet was hyped to witness two of the biggest names on the platform hash it out in the ring, whereas boxing traditionalists were calling it an insult to the tradition. However, when undefeated Floyd Mayweather agreed to take on Logan many people were interested.

So on the 6th of June, the Logan Paul vs Floyd Mayweather boxing match was held. There were many who believed that the 50 wins no losses Mayweather would have no trouble defeating this young upstart but the fight ended up being underwhelming. It was announced as an exhibition fight which means no judges to score the fight, just a referee and only a knockout would prove a decisive victory. The fight carried on through all eight rounds with no one falling to the mat on either side.

On one side there is Mr. Undefeated past his peak physical fitness.

People on both sides of this debate have been backing their chosen fighters, saying that either side won, but there is no way to know for sure. On one side there is Mr. Undefeated past his peak physical fitness and the other is a 100% loss who managed to go the distance.

So why is this important? Why is a disappointing fight between a retired professional and a YouTuber relevant? It’s all about inclusivity.

One of the biggest names from the YouTube platform had the guts to step in the ring with one of the biggest names in the sport of boxing, bringing a new audience to the sport that might not have even noticed it when mentioned before and spawning new fans of a sporting tradition that is centuries old. Rather than saying this is how it should look, it’s meeting people with their interests and leading them to something new, something that might inspire them.
