Fake family or real family?

What happens when family doesn’t come easy for you?

Growing up I had a loving family, in the sense that my mum and dad were married and we all lived in the same house. That’s family right?

The artist Pink wrote a song called 'Family Portrait' and in the song it says "let’s play pretend and act like it comes naturally." She was saying, when everything is going wrong and there are arguments, just pretend everything is ok and you all love each other.

I used to do this all the time, but mainly on a Sunday morning.

You see my mum and I used to shout at each other more than we spoke to each other (sometimes we still do).

I remember walking to church and mum saying "we will talk about this when we get home." She didn’t want us to argue in front of everyone at church.

As kids we weren’t allowed to shout in the street in case the neighbours heard us. Now Mum had a point; it wouldn’t look good if we were always that family who were trying to kill each other.

Through years of conflict we have learnt to not do things that wind each other up. I don’t call my brother "princess" anymore because I know it annoys him.

I don’t want to fight with my family anymore because of something that happened to me when I was a teenager.

I got proof that God was real and that he loved me just as I was.

I got proof that God was real and that he loved me just as I was.

My best friend at the time had a bad back and our vicar said that we should all pray for him so that God would make his back better. Yeah right! As if that was going to happen.

Well, we were praying and the vicar said that it wasn’t his back, but he had one leg longer than the other. And he was right, one of his legs was longer than the other.

So then the vicar said "let's pray that his leg grows." This guy is nuts! Legs don’t magically grow and we are all about to look like idiots in front of the vicar.

So we prayed and I was watching his leg like a hawk, and then something insane happened. It grew!

So we prayed and I was watching his leg like a hawk, and then something insane happened. It grew! Like actually grew! In front of my eyes! I was in shock, but the vicar just kept going like nothing happened.

We were freaking out. We told our parents and everyone we saw for ages. I bet some of them thought we had lost the plot, but we didn’t care. God had healed our friend and we had just witnessed a miracle.

Since then I have known that God was real. Then I thought, if the miracles are real, then Jesus must be real as well.

It took me a few years of growing, and a few hurdles along the way, but slowly I started to adopt Jesus’ beliefs.

One of those is the love he shows to everyone. That’s why I don’t want to fight with my brother and sister anymore, because God showed me how much he loves everyone, and how much we should love them as well.

We still make mistakes, but now we try and handle them with forgiveness and love just like Jesus does.

That doesn’t mean we don’t occasionally disagree. We still make mistakes, but now we try and handle them with forgiveness and love just like Jesus does.

He sees us at our worst and says that he is proud of us and that he loves us more than anything else.

Getting to know Jesus is the greatest thing I have ever done, and I guarantee if you get to know him, you will love him almost as much as he loves you.
