We hear lots about particular football teams and how they are achieving, but do we hear much about the achievements of individual players? The passion, resilience and determination of the players make a great team, so let’s find out about an amazing player today.

His parents couldn’t provide much.

He had a financially tough upbringing in Sao Paulo in Brazil, and funding regular education was difficult for his family. His parents couldn’t provide much but allowed him to play football and never stopped him from following his dreams.

These dreams have resulted in him being an integral part of Manchester City and never having to worry about money again. This is Ederson Santana de Moraes.

From the age of 15, Ederson played for local clubs and proved himself to be a capable player. However, he didn’t believe he was capable and often felt behind other players even from a young age.

I struggled to run as fast as the strikers.

Brainy Quote have referenced one of Ederson’s quotes, “I started playing in goal because I struggled to run as fast as the strikers and the other players out there. I was 10 years old”. This vulnerability at the age of 10 resulted in him being practised and realising his love for goalkeeping.

Ederson seeing that he couldn’t run as fast as the others could have completely knocked his confidence, and left him believing that football wasn’t right for him. However, he stuck at it. He knew that there was a future for him in football and he didn’t let his comparisons to other people stop him from achieving.

Ederson Santana de Moraes stands out from the crowd because of his tattoos, some of his more memorable ones are the yellow smiley face behind his ear and his tribute to faith, which is the ‘I belong to Jesus’ tattoo on his chest.

Ederson has grown up with a strong Christian background and despite a difficult upbringing is claimed to be part of a very generous family.

I was always repeating to myself, ‘I’m going to become a football player.’

His beliefs have ensured that he won’t give up, even when others insisted that he consider his options. Brainy Quote referenced his quote, “When I started playing as a boy, a lot of people were asking, ‘If you don’t make it, what are you going to do?’ But in my head, I was always repeating to myself, ‘I’m going to become a football player.’”

Determination has helped Ederson stand apart from the rest, as he holds a Guinness World Record for Longest Football Drop Kick, which he achieved after kicking the ball 75.35 m (247 ft 2 in) across the ground at the Etihad Campus in 2018.

Achieving a Guinness World Record takes persistence and determination, which Ederson has shown throughout his career and that dedication has secured him as an inspiration to us, and the world.

Ederson realised that just because he wasn’t as good at something, didn’t mean he was bad at everything. He found what he was good at and played to his strengths. When he realised he had the strength, he kept practising to become better than he was before.

Now the little boy who ran slower than the others has a Guinness World record and is a world-renowned footballer. Never give up!
