A woman from the USA has completed an astonishing achievement, becoming the first person to swim the English Channel four times, non-stop.

Sarah Thomas from Colorado, completed the lengths of the channel in 54 hours and ten minutes, setting a new world record.

The epic challenge is ever so more inspiring, as just last year, Sarah was having treatment for breast cancer. 

In recognition of this, our team member Tom produced a list of 5 more extraordinary and inspirational achievements. 

Running a mile in under four minutes

This was unthinkable until 1954 when Roger Bannister did just that.

Against the odds, Roger, a university student at the time, completed the challenge in 3 minutes 59 seconds in Oxford.

Landing on the moon

One of mankind’s greatest achievements, the moon landing in 1969. It was a spectacular triumph, which saw NASA spacecraft, Apollo 11, land on the moon. The first men to step on the moon were U.S astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

Climbing Mount Everest

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were not familiar names at first. Their names became known when they were the first people to successfully reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953.

Winning a Nobel Peace Prize

Recognised widely, American civil rights activist, Martin Luther King is acknowledged for his efforts to give marginalised black Americans greater social equality in the 1960s.

His famous ‘I have a dream’ speech, laid the foundations for greater social cohesion between black and white people.

Winning a gold medal in the Paralympic games

From being unable to speak, eat, walk, and even move, due to two rare conditions. Victoria Arlen became a Paralympic gold medallist in London 2012. 

Now able to walk, talk, and eat again, she has gone on to become an actress, speaker, and a model. Her journey is truly inspiring and extraordinary.
